Week of October 14th!

This week we had so much fun in the Pre-K 4s with Ms. Julie and Mrs. Horton!  On Monday, we were pumpkin scientists!  When we first came in that day, we got to hold a pumpkin and estimated how many pounds we thought it weighed!  At Circle Time, we weighed it on a scale.  It weighed 12 pounds!  Our friend with the closest estimation, guessed 10 pounds.  So close!  Durning Centers, Mrs. Horton cut open the top of the pumpkin, and we each took turns pulling out the seeds, pulp, and other 'goop'!  We could use a big spoon, our hands, or both!  Some friends helped Ms. Julie design the face for our pumpkin, and she carved it out when the pumpkin was clean on the inside!  Some friends didn't want to touch the slimy insides, so we put some in a clean ziploc baggie, so they could feel how mushy it was, while keeping their fingers clean!

Once it was carved, some friends enjoyed putting the "pieces of the jack-o-lantern puzzle" in and out of our pumpkin's face!

We put a flashlight inside, turned out the lights and took several class pictures with our spooky Jack-O-Lantern!  We took one serious picture and a couple of scary ones!!!

We read Froggy Picks a Pumpkin at our second Circle Time!

When everyone finished with snack, we gathered around the front table for a special science experiment:  A Pumpkin-Cano!!!  (A combination of a pumpkin and a volcano!).  While we were carving the big pumpkin at Center Time, we also carved a mini-pumpkin!  Some friends helped Ms. Julie put a few drops of Dawn dishwashing liquid in the pumpkin, we added baking soda, we took turns smelling vinegar (it looked like water in a water bottle, but once we smelled it, we knew it wasn't water!), and then Ms. Julie added the vinegar to the pumpkin!  A chemical reaction occurred, and we had an erupting Pumpkin-Cano!!!  We repeated the experiment a couple of times!  So cool!

On Tuesday, we started our Letter Oo activities!  In the morning at Table Time, we put little 'o' stickers (hole reinforcement stickers!) on the 8 legs of an O-O-Octopus!  Such great fine motor practice!

At Circle Time, we had our Big Event Oo!  We learned that the words ON and OFF start with Oo, and we played a game (which was kind of like musical chairs!) with 'Oranges' made out of Orange paper.  To play, everyone stood on an orange, Ms. Julie held up the sign OFF, put on music, and everyone had to get off their orange and walk around the classroom.  When the music stopped,  Ms. Julie held up the ON sign and everyone had to get back ON an orange!  A couple of oranges were taken off the floor each round, and if you did not find an orange to stand on when the music stopped, you were 'out' and got to eat a mini Oreo!  The last person with an orange after several rounds got to eat 2 mini Oreos!  So much fun!  AND many of the kids realized they could READ the words ON and OFF!

At Centers, we used Orange paint and made prints with real oranges on the letter O!  The pictures even smelled like oranges!

Chester's Adventures continue!  His latest weekend visit was shared with the class at our second Circle Time on Tuesday!

On Wednesday morning, we colored an Oo picture for our Journal that we would do at Center Time.

The Oo bag was returned with some great Oo items!  We read the story of Ollie Octopus and all of the crazy things that he tried to juggle.  And we thought of words that started with the o-o-o sound and wrote them on our notepad!
Finding and counting all of the Os on the Oatmeal container!

Oatmeal, octagon, and an orange!

We completed the Oo page in our journals!  We traced the letter Oo, wrote our own, glued our Oo picture, put on some Oo stickers and stamped uppercase and lowercase Orange Os, too!

On Thursday, we read the book, "Owl Babies".  We talked about how owls are nocturnal (just like
Chester our class raccoon!)  We cut out an O when we came in that morning (it was a folded piece of paper...we cut it on the line, and when we opened it up, it was the letter O!)  We decorated it with feathers at Art Center to make our very own O is for Owl Art!

We all tried some Night Animal Yoga poses at our second Circle Time!  We took a few deep breaths together and practiced the positions!  So much fun!

On Friday, we added some Garden Yoga Positions!  We are getting pretty good at this!

On Friday, we read a couple of our favorite Halloween books!  We started with The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything.  This is a fun one because there are movements that the kids can do while the story is being read!  We also read Go Away Big Green Monster!  The kids can actually read along with this repetitive story!

We talked about how a pumpkin is just called a pumpkin unless a face is added, and then it is called a Jack-O-Lantern!  We all practiced writing the Letter O (for the O in jack-O-lantern!) on our big marker board during Circle Time.  At Center time, we frosted and turned plain pumpkin shaped sugar cookies into Jack-O-Lanterns with candy googly eyes, mini-chocolate chips and raisins.  We got to eat them at snack time!  Yum!

At Center Time on Friday, we practiced writing the letter Oo as well as other letters in orange and black sand.  We could use the witchy halloween fingers, or our own fingers!  Such a fun way to practice letter writing!

We continue to have fun at Table Time in the morning when we come to school, during center time, and outside on the playground!  We are all enjoying the 'cooler' weather!

Table Time!

Center Time!

Playground Time!

AND we are still keeping busy with our weekly jobs!

This week, so many friends realized they were wearing shirts that had the Letter Oo on them!

They were also very busy finding the letter O all around our classroom and pointing out the letter O in our classroom books!  Ask them to find some letter Os at home, too!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!  See you Monday!

~Ms. Julie
